Kiribati blames 'misunderstanding' for rift with New Zealand

Diplomatic tensions are heating up, as New Zealand decides to review its aid to Kiribati, given a series of cancelled or postponed meetings. But was it a deliberate snub on the part of Kiribati, or simply a miscommunication? PMN News and Radio 531pi breakfast show Pacific Mornings explored the issue. On 30 January, NZ Foreign Affairs Minister Vaovasamanaia Winston Peters told William Terite that NZ has given Kiribati $102 million over recent years and taxpayers deserve accountability for how it’s used. While denying that New Zealand is outright cutting aid, he insists a review is necessary to ensure funding is being spent effectively. Ultimately, Peters frames this as a failure of communication on Kiribati’s part and signals that New Zealand won’t continue providing aid without clearer engagement. But on 31 January, Kiribati MP Ruth Cross-Kwansing, the Minister of Women, Youth, Sport, and Social Affairs, downplayed the idea that Winston Peters was deliberately snubbed, instead calling it a misunderstanding due to poor communication and differing expectations. She acknowledged the anxiety caused by Peters' remarks, especially given the significant role New Zealand’s aid plays in Kiribati’s health, infrastructure, and economic sectors. While understanding New Zealand’s right to review its aid program, she expresses hope that diplomatic ties remain strong and that both countries can move past this miscommunication to continue their partnership.
