FREE STUDY GUIDE PACK 👉 https://resources.nursingsos.com/stud... In this video, we'll walk through the Hemoglobin A1c test (aka HbA1c). This is a 3-month blood sugar test that every nursing student needs to know about for your nursing school exams (and the NCLEX®!!) Let's break down what the hemoglobin A1C (HbA1c) test really measures and why it's so important in diabetes management and patient care! The HbA1c test measures your patient's average blood glucose levels over the past 3 months by looking at the sugar attached to the hemoglobin part of red blood cells. Since red blood cells have a lifespan of about 3 months, this test gives us a pretty good picture of blood sugar control over that period of time. 🧠 MEMORY TRICK: A1C = 3! The HbA1c looks back at the last 3 months of blood sugar levels. 💡 KEY CRITICAL THINKING POINT: The HbA1c is different from blood sugar tests like fasting blood glucose or random blood glucose. While those tests show what's happening right now, the HbA1c can show us the bigger picture of glucose control over months. 🚨 NCLEX® KEY POINT: HbA1c = long-term glucose control (3 months) Fasting/random glucose = immediate glucose level Understanding this difference is crucial for diabetes management questions on your nursing exams! This test is essential for monitoring diabetes management, adjusting medications, and educating patients about their long-term blood sugar control. When you see HbA1c values on the NCLEX® or in clinical practice, remember you're looking at around 3 months of glucose history, not just a snapshot of what happened that day. 🔔 Subscribe for more nursing tips like this: https://www.youtube.com/nursingsos?su... #HbA1c #DiabetesNursing #NCLEXPrep #BloodGlucose #NursingEducation #DiabetesManagement #HemoglobinA1C #NCLEXTips #MedSurgNursing #PatientCare LEGAL DISCLAIMER: We are a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for us to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites.
