Subscribe to my you tube channel for 280+ more coal mine tributes and counting. Vane Tempest...Londonderry Collieries Ltd. announced their intentions to develop a new colliery in January 1923. A ceremony in which the first sod was cut was dug by the Viscount Castlereagh, to mark the start of the boring process, was held on the 19th of December 1923. Two shafts were sunk, the "Vane" and the "Tempest", named in honour of Lady Frances Anne Vane Tempest. A freezing process was used, with the groundwater artificially frozen during the boring through sandy layers.Vane Tempest Colliery began coal production in 1926, over 2 years after sinking of the colliery had began.In 1935, there were 1,313 people employed at Vane Tempest Colliery at Seaham (1,046 working below ground and 267 working on the surface). At that time the miners were extracting coal from the Five Quarter, Hutton and Low Main seams.New pithead baths opened at Vane Tempest Colliery in 1937.Vane Tempest Colliery sadly closed on the 4th of June 1993, with the loss of around, 900 jobs.The first homes in the East Shore Village housing development in Seaham were occupied in September 2003. The 500 house development was built on the 32-hectare site of the former Vane Tempest Colliery, which had laid derelict for over a decade since the colliery closed. The former Regional Development Agency, One North East, was involved in promoting the scheme.
