Two weeks after having to drop at the 15 mile mark of my last race, the Shakori 40, and a week after hobbling to finish a 14 mile run, my friend Eric convinced me to do the Oakwood 24 Hour Race just for fun. Eric was planning on running the 12 hour version of the race, showing up in the early afternoon after working in the morning. I decided on the 24 hour version and had planned to try to make it 20 miles or so, then hanging out and camping for the night and maybe do a few more laps in the morning. Since I was still dealing with some groin and adductor pain, along with having gained over 20 pounds since the Grindstone 100 at the end of September having only run 23 miles in the entire month of November I had no expectations of a good performance. In fact, my expectations were so low that I made an informal bet with Eric that he would be able to run more miles in 12 hours than I could run in 24 hours. I don't have any explanation as to what happened once the race started other than I started off fairly conservatively and the course was pretty flat so none of my injuries came into play. I kept moving and would adjust my pace down every 12-15 miles or so to give myself an extra minute per mile and kept my aid station stops brief with only a couple of exceptions. Follow along as I have a surprisingly good race to close out 2023!
