Jack Reacher is tightly-written action thriller from 2012. Although it didn’t exactly cater to the expectations of fans of Lee Childs’ books, largely owed to the casting, it was a fun and engaging film in its own right. Its sequel, however, is a case study in how to torpedo a franchise before it ever gets off the ground. On this episode of Sequelitis, we ask: Why was Jack Reacher neutered in his own movie? How can a film with such heart spawn such a soulless sequel? And is Helen Rodin waifu? It’s funny – I decided I wanted to start a series of videos where I criticize lackluster sequels to good movies and the first name that came to mind for this series was “Sequelitis.” And then, as though this episode of my life was penned by a Hollywood hack who can’t help but write contrivance-filled, Tumblr-smut-tier stories, I very conveniently came across Egoraptor’s channel and found out he beat me to the punch. He covered video games though and owed to the fact that I plan to cover film, for the most part, and am separated from Egoraptor by several years and an entire Ocean, I have decided to use the Sequelitis format for my own work. Once more, I am not in any way affiliated with Egoraptor nor do I have any claim to the Sequelitis brand – if that is a thing – and I’d go as far as to encourage others to use the format to broadcast their own takes on sequels that don’t compare to their progenitors, in any genre or medium of storytelling. #Sequelitis #JackReacher #NeverGoBack
