The joy of south eastern Liberians, as a result of rapid rehabilitation road works by the then newly inaugurated government of Liberia President Joseph Boakai in April of 2024, is all but short lived. Since mid-July, the entire stretch of highway between Ganta, Nimba County and Zwedru, Grand Geded County, began showing signs of trouble. As of the date of this video (August 29, 2024) things have degenerated to “status quo” of the previous regimes under Ellen Johnson and George Weah, respectively. As a direct result, the prices of basic commodities have started skyrocketing as trucks and other vehicles ferrying goods and services to the south eastern region are now stalled. The Chinese construction company (CHICO) doing the tarmacking of several segments of highway in Nimba and River Gee counties, was contracted by the Ministry of Public Works. According to sources from the ministry, all companies contracted by the government to rehabilitate roads throughout the country, had a 24-month contract. This means, in effect, that these companies, including CHICO, should have been present along these highways for the duration of the above mentioned period. Unfortunately, this is not the case in Grand Gedeh County, as is evident in the video as of the date of recording. Strangely, the same CHICO did a pretty good job on the Zwedru-Kahnwekehn segment. Till date and in the midst of torrential rainfall, that segment remains in tact. So, what is the problem with the Ganta-Zwedru segment?
