Braces Explained: Coil Springs In this video, I will be answer the question of "what are coil springs?" and highlighting the different type of coil springs we use in orthodontics! Coil springs come in different types and in this video, I am going to be reviewing three different types of coil springs (open coil, closed coil & passive coil) 1] Open coil springs come in a spool and are used to create / open up space. They are used on your main wire and are compressed between two or more teeth. As they want to return to their original form (uncoiled), they will push your front tooth more forward, and the back tooth further back. Therefore, open coil springs on your braces are used to OPEN space! 2] Closed coil springs are the exact opposite of open coil springs. They are used to CLOSE space. They come in a conformation that is closed, and as we stretch them out and attach them to two teeth, they try to return to their original shape. As the coils return to their shape, they help decrease the space between teeth. Therefore, closed coil springs on your braces are used to CLOSE space! 3] Passive coil springs. These look very similar to closed coil springs but are not used to make or close space, but rather to preserve them. If you need to HOLD a certain space between teeth for either implants or for future veneers, these passive coil springs are what you likely have.
