Manthittu tribal village, pulayar tribes. #triballife #tribalvillage #tribalhouse #tribals #tribes In this post, we will look at a small tribal village called Manthittu, located behind the Amaravati Dam near Palani. The Pulayar tribal people live here. The Pulayar (also spelled Pulaya) are a Dalit community primarily found in the Indian state of Kerala and parts of Tamil Nadu. Historically, they were considered an oppressed caste under the caste system and were engaged in agricultural labor, such as tilling fields and working as bonded laborers. Over time, they have played a significant role in Kerala's social and political movements, especially in the struggle against caste-based discrimination. Cultural and Social Aspects Occupation: Traditionally, Pulayars were agricultural laborers, potters, and fishermen. Language: They primarily speak Malayalam and Tamil, depending on their region. Music and Arts: They are known for their folk music and dance forms, like Kudiyattam and Pulayan Pattu (Pulayar songs). Religion: Most Pulayars follow Hinduism, but some have converted to Christianity and Islam over time. Role in Kerala’s Social Reform Movements The Pulayar community played a crucial role in the Vaikom Satyagraha (1924–1925) and other anti-caste movements. Ayyankali, a great social reformer from the Pulayar community, fought for the rights of Dalits, including education and land rights. The Temple Entry Proclamation of 1936 in Travancore was a significant victory for the Pulayars and other oppressed communities. Current Status Today, the Pulayar community has improved socio-economic conditions due to reservations in education and government jobs. Many Pulayars have moved into various professions, including politics, education, and administration. Despite progress, caste-based discrimination still exists in some areas
