It is the second-largest city in the European Union. Madrid has the second-largest GDP in the European Union and its influence in politics, education, entertainment, media, fashion, science and culture contribute to its status as one of the world's major global cities. While Madrid possesses modern infrastructure, it has preserved the look and feel of many of its historic neighbourhoods and streets. Its landmarks include the Plaza Mayor, the Royal Palace, the Opera, Cibeles Palace, the monumental buildings of Gran Via and the Retiro Park. The site of Madrid has been occupied since prehistoric times, and there are archaeological remains of a Celtic settlement, Roman villas and Visigothic buildings. The Moors controlled the city until Alfonso VI conquered it in 1085. Philip II moved the court to Madrid in 1561 and the city grew rapidly during the 16th and 17th centuries. The royal court attracted many of Spain's leading artists and writers to Madrid. The 18th century saw a spate of construction, including the Royal Palace, the Prado and the Puerta de Alcalá. During the 19th century Madrid weatered a Napoleonic invasion and many revolutions, however by the end of the century it recovered. The city saw massive industrialization and expansion. In the early 20th century Madrid undertook a major urban development with the creation of the Gran Vía, a monumental thoroughfare. The city was besieged during the Civil War, but recovered again and entered a new age of prosperity since the 1980s. 0:00 Puerta de Sol 7:40 Plaza Mayor 14:00 San Miguel Market 30:20 Royal Palace 50:00 Opera 1:14:00 Temple of Debod 1:29:00 Plaza Espana 1:35:00 Gran Via 1:49:00 Calle Preciados 1:59:00 Calle de Alcala 2:15:00 Cibeles Palace 2:28:00 Retiro Park 3:05:00 Cristal Palace 3:16:00 Rose Garden #madrid #spain #travel #beautifuldestinations #europe #4k #summer
