Explore Rose Island Lighthouse from above in Newport, Rhode Island. Built in 1870, the Rose Island Light sits in Newport, Rhode Island’s Narragansett Bay. It was designed by Vermont architect Albert Dow and shares its award-winning architectural style with several "sister" lights throughout New England. The structure itself is uniquely positioned atop the remains of Fort Hamilton, an 18th-century bastion. Key History and Restoration Decommissioning: The lighthouse was abandoned in 1970 following the completion of the nearby Newport Bridge. Preservation: In 1984, the Rose Island Lighthouse Foundation was established to restore the site after the City of Newport acquired it from the federal government. Recognition: It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987 and returned to service as a private navigational aid in 1992. Current Use Today, the lighthouse serves as a secluded travel destination accessible only by water. Managed by the Foundation, the site offers unique "lighthouse keeper" programs where guests can pay to stay overnight or spend a week maintaining the grounds and performing historic chores. #lighthouse #rhodeisland
