This video is an excerpt from the Perfect Practice Course at: http://playbetterbanjo.com Ever notice, when watching your banjo heroes perform, how easy they make it look? How little effort they seem to be applying to the task at hand? That’s because they’ve mastered one of the secrets to successful musicianship: Relaxation Whether your goal is to improve your accuracy, your tone, your speed or all of the above, your biggest enemy is tension and the way to defeat that enemy is through the power of relaxation. Of course, this is easier said than done. It’s natural for the body to tense when faced with the complex cocktail of coordination and physical agility that is required to execute challenging passages of music. To eradicate unnecessary tension from our playing we must first become adept at identifying it when it arises in our body. Simply noticing when and where you are experiencing unwanted tension will go a long way to correcting the issue. Tension Awareness Exercise Choose a short passage of music from your practice items and play it at a moderate tempo. While you are playing, take note of the amount of tension that exists in your fingers, wrists, and forearms. Don’t try to do anything about this tension just yet. Simply notice it and give it a rating on a scale of one to ten. One being so little tension that you are unable to execute the passage, ten being so much tension that you, likewise, are unable to execute the passage. Now choose a few random locations on this imaginary tension meter and attempt to play the passage at the newly defined tension level. For example, if you rated your tension as a 5, see what it feels and sounds like when you play at level 3. How about 8? Now play the passage again but this time cycle through the entire spectrum of tension. Using the above example, I would start at my natural tension level (5) and then, playing all the while, I would slowly relax into a 4…and then a 3, etc. until I’m so floppy and sloppy that I’ve rendered my playing ‘unmusical’. Then, without stopping, I would slowly increase my tension level until I’ve reached a 10, at which point I would start working my way back down toward a tension level of 1 and so on. Cycle through this exercise about five times before stopping. Doing this exercise on a regular basis will improve your ability to recognize and adjust tension levels during practice sessions and live performances. This simple trick can make a huge difference in your clawhammer playing!
