Herbie Hancock’s “Dolphin Dance” is one of the modern classic jazz standards, even though it was released way back in 1966 on his album ‘Maiden Voyage’. The twists and turns of the melody and chords are such a beautiful challenge - this has always been one of my favorite tunes. This song also commonly causes problems - because the harmony in the final 4 measures of the form is so ambiguous. What DOES Herbie actually play there? As a bonus, if you watch all the way through you’ll see what the chords are in that spot. (I actually didn’t name them on purpose, because you could name them in many ways.. but it’s the chord voicings that are important). As always, I record the vibraphone track FIRST, using a click - then I overdub the piano part after. One take - no editing, no correcting.
