#mz #motorcycle #gdr The export hit par excellence. After its presentation at the Leipzig Autumn Fair in 1988, series production of the ETZ 251 began in January 1989. This motorcycle series featured some changes compared to the previously produced ETZ 250 model. As with the 125/150 models, MZ also collaborated with the renowned designers Karl Clauss Dietel and Lutz Rudolph on the design of the ETZ 251. The originally export-only front disc brake was a hydraulic fixed-caliper brake, attached to the right slider tube of the fork tube. Until 1983, the ETZ was equipped with a Brembo system from Italy, after which a domestically produced in-house development was used. From 1984, models manufactured in the GDR could also be purchased from the factory with a standard-built disc brake. The electrical system of the ETZ 251 introduced a 12-volt electrical system with a 180-watt three-phase alternator for the first time in series production. Despite almost identical mass compared to the previously used direct current machine of the TS, significantly higher power could now be generated. The power reserve also allowed for the installation of electrical accessories. The three-phase rectifier and the regulator were located below the seat. The battery was under the right, lockable side cover, enabling easier maintenance and care compared to the TS. The front headlight with asymmetrical low beam was a matte black built-up headlight with a diameter of 170 mm. It was equipped with a 12-volt 45-watt/40-watt bulb; from 1987, it was equipped with an H4 halogen lamp. Also new was the brake license plate light; it was a new development and made of plastic.
