In the Thane District, Bassein Fort is located in Vasai village. Bassein Fort, which initially belonged to the Arab Sultanate of Cambay, was conquered by the Portuguese in the early 1400s. The Fort of St. Sebastian of Vasai, formerly known as the Northern Court, became the headquarters of the Portuguese Captain of the North. Although most of the Portuguese buildings inside the Bassein Fort are in ruins, three 17th-century chapels remain. The Fort was occupied by the Marathas in 1739 and ceded to the British shortly thereafter. Additionally, it retains its fortifications that overlook the Creek of Vasai.
