We finally got our hands on Sony’s brand-new cinema body, the Sony FX2, and took it into a Muay Thai training session at Iron Tiger to see how it handles fast movement, low light and a bit of chaos. It’s a familiar Sony experience in many ways, think FX3/FX30 ergonomics with a deeper grip, loads of 1/4" mounts, multiple record buttons and a built-in fan for long take, now paired with Sony’s latest AI processor for autofocus. In practice, that AF is the headline. It’s sticky in the best way, locking onto subjects through occlusions like swinging bags and people crossing frame, and it makes run-and-gun work feel effortless. The EVF is the obvious new twist. In harsh light it’s helpful, but on a rig it can get in the way, and the proximity sensor will blank the LCD if you hold the camera close to your body. We disabled that in the menus pretty quickly. The top-mounted joystick for AF point selection still feels awkward if you come from a photography background; we wish it lived on the back. Spec-wise, it’s essentially an A7 IV heart in a cinema shell. You get clean 4K30, but 4K60 comes with a crop, and 120fps is Full HD only. In 2025 that feels like a miss, even though the overall image is crisp, the low-light performance is solid, and S-Log grades exactly as you’d expect. The fan and heat-sink are the unsung heroes here, long 4K recordings without thermal anxiety are a big win over the A7 IV. Huge thanks to Iron Tiger Gym in Cape Town for letting us film during training.
