As much as we love the castles and historical locations found in Ireland, we are proud that they grab the attention of filmmakers and directors and bring them to film their scenes at them - this was the case with Trim Castle in County Meath, Ireland, which happens to be the place where some scenes from the Braveheart movie were taken ( • Trim Castle, County Meath, Ireland - Best ... ). Trim Castle is located on the South bank of the River Boyne in Trim, county Meath, Ireland. Trim Castle is considered the largest Norman castle to be found until this very day in Ireland and thus makes it a place to mark and visit whenever it comes to Ireland tourism. Historical buildings are not only mesmerizing by the way they look and appear, but they also carry stories which might be interesting and surprising as well. When it comes to Trim Castle in Ireland, it is important to mention that it took 30 years from Hugh de Lacy and his son Walter to built this castle back then as the caput of the Lordship of Meath. There are different things that make this castle unique and one of those important destinations that tourists should head for. One of these things is that the design of the central three-storey keep (which is also known as donjon or great tower) is unique for a Norman keep being of cruciform shape, with twenty corners. History says that Trim Castle was used back then as the center of Norman administration for the Lordship of Meath and it was specifically chosen because it is placed on a raised ground, overlooking a fording point on the River Boyne - which is another interesting thing about visiting this castle, which is getting the chance to see Boyne River. When Hugh de Lucy took possession of the Trim Castle, he managed to build a huge ringwork castle defended by a stout double palisade and external ditch on top of the hill. It is believed that there may have also been further defenses around the cliffs fringing the high ground. Part of a stone footed timber gatehouse lies beneath the present stone gate at the west side of the castle. Enjoying the walk through the castle was interesting and trying even to guess some of the reasons behind the things done there was more fun. We discovered that Trim Castle was built in 1173 and the remains of St. Marys Abbey found there are believed to be found by St. Patrick. Trim Castle has also been known as the "Yellow Steeple" due to the way it looks and the color of its stones when they are exposed to the sun. From the things that added to this place and brought people to ask about where it is and how they could visit it was Braveheart movie that was directed by Mel Gibson, since some of the scenes were filmed there and which is one of the movies that almost all the people out there have already seen several times before. Going with the kids is always fun - they manage to go the hard ways and climb those hills which you might never think about taking - which is exactly what happened with us that we all enjoyed the place - whether us or the kids before heading to have lunch somewhere near. County Meath, where Trim Castle is located, is in the province of Leinster and is part of Mid-East Region. "Meath" is named after the historic Kingdom of Meath (from Midhe, which means the middle).
