Known as "Mr. Entertainment," Wayne Newton was the highest paid performer in Las Vegas during the height of his career. His first big hit was "Danke Schoen" back in 1963. That Top Ten hit featured some quaint, yet elegant piano notes in it played by a young pianist from Tulsa, Oklahoma named Russell Bridges, better known as Leon Russell. Leon played on many of Wayne's recordings and became an arranger and session leader for Mr. Newton. Wayne also worked with Russell's high school pal David Gates, and recorded David's song "Too Late To Meet (Once Upon A Time)." From an August 22, 1967 session led by Russell, here is "Through The Eyes Of Love," written by Jack Clement and Milton Addington. Leon did the arrangements for the session players and conducted them through them. For Newton's August 1967 session, Leon had Benjamin Barrett as the orchestra manager, and as piano player he had Mac Rebennack, who like Leon, went by a professional name, his being Dr. John. Guitarists included Mike Deasy, Barney Kessel, Ray Pohlman. and a guy who would work a lot with Leon in the years to come... Gordon Shryock. Donald Bagley was the bass player with Jerry Williams on drums and Gene Estes on percussion. There were eight players in the string and on trumpets were James Zito and John Audino. "Just A Memory" was also recorded that session, which went as the flipside of Capitol 5993 with "Through The Eyes Of Love." Both were also included on Wayne's album The Greatest! Nearly fifty years later, Leon played piano on a few songs for Jack Clement's album For Once And For All, which was recorded (obviously) before Jack's passing in August 2013.
