Or perhaps the myth of a Japanese policeman sacrificing himself and turning into a Taiwanese deity? And what about the war machine that stands beside the deity as a protector? While tales of mythical creatures exist worldwide, Taiwan has rarely documented such stories. Today, we follow a local legend from Chiayi to explore the origins of these tales. Every journey needs a direction, so let’s head to Puzi, Chiayi. 【Taiwanese Monster Legends】The Legend of Pig Mother During the Qing Dynasty era, food was hard to come by. In Chiayi, there was a family raising pigs, and their sow went out of the pen while searching for food during pregnancy, eating sweet potato leaves nearby. A farmer, upset about his crops being eaten, ambushed the sow in the field and struck her dead with a hoe. The twelve piglets inside her womb also perished. The sow pleaded her grievance in hell to the King of Hell. After verifying her claims, the King of Hell granted her the "Black Command Flag," allowing her to return to the human world to seek vengeance. She transformed into "Pig Mother" and caused chaos, demanding a life for a life, leading to turmoil in the area. Eventually, through Mazu's mediation, the Black Command Flag was retrieved, and a temple was built to honor her, protecting the local community. She was bestowed the title of "Lady Black Skin."
