The event was recognised as the United Kingdom’s largest annual arts and light festival. Over two evenings, buildings, streets, and public spaces across the city were transformed by light installations, projections, and performances by artists from the UK and abroad. The 2025 edition marked the twentieth year of the festival and continued its focus on bringing large-scale public art into everyday urban environments. The theme for 2025 was “Landmarks,” encouraging reflection on the city’s history, architecture, and the places that hold personal or collective significance. Among the installations was a projection on the façade of the Queens Hotel titled One Second Lovestory by Dirk Rauscher, celebrating two centuries of the modern railway. Another major work, Portals: The Machine of Worlds by Portuguese studio Ocubo, appeared on Leeds Civic Hall, created in collaboration with the British Library and featuring imagery drawn from its collections. At the University of Leeds, graduate artist Anya Thompson presented A Midnight Hop, a projection piece featuring moving silhouettes of rabbits under a star-filled sky. The festival was free to attend and spread across multiple city-centre zones. Venues included historic buildings, public squares, and cultural institutions. Because of the event’s size, several roads were closed temporarily, and public transport routes were adjusted to manage pedestrian access and safety. Visitors were encouraged to plan their travel in advance and many arrived early to avoid the busiest times around key projection sites. Since its launch in 2005, Light Night Leeds had become an established part of the city’s cultural calendar, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. It provided a platform for both established and emerging artists, while also drawing attention to the city’s urban landscape by presenting it in new and imaginative ways. The event’s emphasis on light-based art allowed for a wide variety of approaches, from static projections to interactive works that responded to audience movement. By engaging residents and visitors alike, Light Night Leeds 2025 demonstrated how contemporary art could transform familiar urban spaces into temporary environments of sound, movement, and colour. Marking two decades of the festival, the 2025 edition continued the tradition of combining creativity, technology, and public participation in the heart of Leeds. At Light Night Leeds 2025, the act Spark! Drummers performed at Trinity Leeds on 22 and 23 October, presenting a combination of live percussion, choreographed movement, and lighting effects. Their performances took place several times each evening — at 18:00, 19:00, 20:00, and 21:00 — with each set lasting around 20 minutes and attracting large audiences beneath the shopping centre’s glass dome. The group is known for blending powerful rhythmic drumming with theatrical choreography and illuminated costumes featuring synchronised LED lighting. During the event, performers moved through the space, interacting with spectators and using the architecture as part of the performance environment. The combination of music, light, and movement created an immersive, multi-sensory experience within the city’s central retail area. Their appearance formed part of Light Night Leeds’ 2025 theme, “Landmarks,” highlighting both cultural and architectural features of the city while bringing live performance energy to the wider festival programme.
