Abraham is called the father of faith in Romans 4. He is the man through whom God chose to bring blessing to all the nations of the earth. His name is invoked throughout both Testaments as the model of covenant faithfulness and trust in God's promises. And in Genesis 20, he hands his wife to a pagan king to protect himself — for the second time. This chapter sits between two of the most dramatic moments in the entire book of Genesis. The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah comes before it. The birth of Isaac comes after it. And nestled between those two monumental events is this uncomfortable story that most sermon series quietly skip. In this video, we are not skipping it. We are going inside it — into the Hebrew text, the historical setting, the literary structure, and the theological argument the narrator is making with this placement. What we find is not a story designed to embarrass Abraham. It is a story designed to reveal the character of God. We examine the confrontation between God and Abimelech in verses 3 through 7, where God bypasses the covenant patriarch entirely and speaks directly to a pagan king — acknowledging his moral integrity using the Hebrew word tom, a word that describes wholeness and blamelessness. We look at what it means that God calls Abraham a nabi, a prophet and divine mediator, in the immediate aftermath of his deception. We trace the literary connection between the closing of wombs in verse 18, the healing prayer of Abraham in verse 17, and the opening of Sarah's womb in Genesis 21:1. And we ask the question this chapter is designed to force: if the promise travels through a man like this, what exactly is the promise resting on? The answer reshapes how you read every covenant passage in the Bible. Key passages examined in this video include Genesis 20:1 through 18, Genesis 12:10 through 20, Genesis 21:1 through 2, Romans 4:20 through 21, and Hebrews 11:8 through 11. Whether you are studying Genesis for the first time or you have read it a hundred times, this investigation into one of Scripture's most overlooked chapters will leave you with a clearer picture of the God who keeps His word regardless of who He is keeping it through. Context and Canon is dedicated to the kind of biblical exegesis that takes the text seriously — its history, its language, its literary structure, and its theological weight. Every video is an investigation, not a lecture. Every episode is a journey into what Scripture actually says, not just what we have been told it says.
