Bethlehem, in the central West Bank, is among the world’s oldest inhabited cities. Its history spans over 3,000 years, shaped by various civilizations from Canaanites to Ottomans through the centuries. After the 1948 Arab-Israeli war, Bethlehem came under Jordanian rule. In 1967, Israel occupied it during the Six-Day War. In 1995, it was handed to the Palestinian Authority under the Oslo Accords agreement. The city’s population includes Muslims and Christians, though the Christian community has declined recently due to emigration and unrest. Still, Bethlehem holds deep symbolic national importance for Palestinians. Bethlehem’s economy depends on small industries, farming, and religious sites. Youth unemployment is high and persistent. Since the 2000s, efforts to preserve culture and grow sustainable tourism have steadily increased. Its cityscape shows many eras, from Ottoman buildings to refugee camps and new Palestinian structures. The nearby Israeli barrier restricts movement, trade, and urban development in significant and lasting ways. Arabic is mainly spoken, but English is used in schools and globally.
