Downhill biking on «El Camino de la Muerte»

While staying for a few days in La Paz, Bolivia, in Juli 2010, we took the trip down the old road to the Yungas. Quit popular nowadays, you get lots of gear and a guide. The ride itself is quite easy. The climate is changing rapidly, it's freezing cold at the top, and warm in Coroico. It's easy to do and safe, if you can drive a mountainbike. I really don't know what the 18 cyclists did that died here since the route is open for mountain bikers. Sure, the danger is there, and if you drive over the edge, you're dead. You have to control your bike, and you shouldn't speed. For cars, there is a new road which is longer, but safer. I don't know why, but our guide chose to take the old road for driving back to La Paz. That was the scariest car ride of my life.
