The Cup and the Water Four kinds of Dhamma listeners Anguttara Nikaya 4.113 Album 54 The Buddha taught that there are four types of people in relation to his teachings. He illustrated this with the example of a cup and water. The cup represents the mind, while clean water represents the Dhamma. A cup with holes at the bottom cannot hold water because it leaks out. A cup that is stained with dirt will contaminate clean water once it is poured in. A cup that is overturned cannot receive clean water because there is no space to contain it. Only a cup that is clean, unstained, without holes, and properly positioned can hold clean water. These correspond respectively to people who: 1. Cup with a leak: does not retain what it receives. 2. Cup with impurities: retains but contaminates what’s received. 3. Cup upside-down: cannot hold what is received. 4. Cup upright, uncracked, clean: receives, retains, and preserves well. Thus, a person who understands and appreciates the Dhamma is like the fourth cup. These are the people who understand the Dhamma, truly appreciate its value, and most importantly, put it into practice in their daily lives. Because of this, they experience its real benefits - greater clarity, inner peace, wisdom, and a gradual freedom from doubt and suffering. The benefit of the fourth person is not just in knowing, but in living the Dhamma. Through consistent practice, they uphold the Five Precepts, engage in acts of generosity, cultivate loving-kindness and compassion, develop mindfulness, deepen right understanding, and progress steadily along the path. The others, however, show little interest, lack understanding, and remain clouded by doubt, unable to experience these deeper benefits. Which cup are you?
