American Mah Jongg is a game of skill, competition and luck. It can be played by all ages. In my series of videos, I show in easy step by step fashion how my group plays the game; not necessarily how the NMJ League expects the game to be played. You can imagine how challenging it is to be one person playing four parts!!!! In some clips I show many more tiles on racks than there should be. I apologize. Every player has 13 tiles except East who starts the game by discarding their 14th tile. To win MAH JONGG a player picks up a tile to make a 14 tiled hand from the copyrighted NMJ League card that is printed every year (no discard on winning). In our game we do not bet, so I’ll not be making a video on how to do that. I’m planning a couple of more videos on skills and strategies, how to use jokers, how we play with three players and etiquette. For those well versed in the game, I consider myself a beginner with just one year of face to face play under my belt. My goal is to make these videos as simple as possible to get more people playing the game. There are several Facebook groups where questions are answered and players can find local groups to play and there’s a myriad of very seasoned players who do Mah Jongg videos here on YouTube I’d recommend you check these out. To become a better player I recommend that you take notes during a game, look for books (ebooks For Kindle with practices to do) watch other YouTube videos and practice making hands, choosing categories with your tiles and MJ card at home. Practice every day. Observe several face to face games, have a seasoned player sit with you to advise you when you first play. Be aware you will make mistakes. For me making a mistake has been the best way to remember and to learn.
