My old CX build was an adapted “retro” hybrid; a 1989 Peugeot Concept 18. It tips the scales at between 12.5 and 13KG, ran 24 speed, was slightly too large for me and had minimal tyre clearance. It was a nice ride that I put over 1000 miles in to and took it through all sorts of conditions but when the opportunity came up to upgrade... I had to. The new build is based around a Dolan Multi-X Cross Frame in 7005 Aluminium but the forks had been upgraded to carbon by the previous owner. After building my 1 x 10 commuter mountain bike I wanted to go the same route with this but matching road and mountain components is a little trickier. The final build weighs in at just under 10.5KG and cost around £490. The only “used” components on the bike are the pedals, seat post, frame set, bars and shifters. The rest were all bought brand new and bumped up the price slightly. The research paid off and the SRAM 10 speed gearing matched up between road and mountain. The gear cable will need an inline adjuster somewhere as the SRAM 10 speed MTB derailleurs don’t use them and it is crucial for adjusting. I’m going to enjoy this build now. For me, 1 x 10 is a much simpler and cleaner way to ride. Of course you lose out on some top or bottom end but with the current gearing I have enough to cover 95% of my riding. To try and get this under 10KG I could look at upgrading the wheelset and tyres. OK, time to enjoy the bike!
