Continuing our Summer Olympic theme, Endoscopic Spine Surgeon Dr. Peter Derman joins us on TheAthleteSpine. As an undergraduate, Peter attended Stanford University and competed as a Varsity Gymnast. He cited his greatest athletic achievement as being named a 3-Time All-American on Rings. He then went on to earn his MD from Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania and MBA from Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania in Health Care Management in 2012. After completing his residency and fellowship in Spine Surgery, Dr. Derman now works at the Texas Back Institute, specializing in minimally invasive and endoscopic procedures. He discusses his experience from both the lens of the high level gymnast and the one that is now treating high level gymnasts. Gymnastics is often one of the most viewed events at the Summer Olympic Games — and we are in awe of the strength and flexibility necessary to compete at a high level. But, this may place their necks and backs at greater risk of various injuries. We discuss the risk of neck and low back injuries that gymnasts face and how they work to prevent these injuries. Disc herniations can be common in this athlete population, so we also dive into the various treatments for these presentations — and the ultra-minimally invasive procedures (ENDOSCOPY!) that can be successfully performed to get these gymnasts back sooner than ever! #summerolympics #teamusa #USgymnastics #gymnastics #spineinjury #neckinjury #discherniation #discectomy #endoscopy #endoscopicspinesurgery #parisolympics #Paris2024
