Exploring Tynemouth | Castle, Hidden Beach & Seaside Walk

Our walk in Tynemouth begins near the impressive ruins of Tynemouth Priory and Castle, which stand high on the cliff overlooking the North Sea. The priory was originally founded in the 7th century as a small monastery, but the large stone complex we see today was built by the Normans in the 11th century. Over time it became one of the most important religious sites in northern England and was closely connected with the monks of Durham Cathedral. Because of its strategic position at the entrance to the River Tyne, the site was also heavily fortified. The monastery later became a castle and played an important defensive role for many centuries, protecting the river and the nearby port of Newcastle upon Tyne. Today the ruins are one of the most recognisable landmarks along the north-east coast. Walking around the old stone walls and towers, you can really imagine how important this place once was both as a religious centre and as a coastal fortress. From here we slowly make our way down towards King Edward's Bay, a small and beautiful beach tucked below the castle walls. At the bottom, right on the sand, you’ll find a small restaurant known for its fantastic seafood – a perfect place to relax after the walk and enjoy the view of the sea. ► LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE!
