The Regional Health & Family Welfare Training Centre (RHFWTC) at Shillong, The State Health Systems Resource Centre (SHSRC) of Govt of Meghalaya, in collaboration with the Govt. Civil Hospital, Shillong organized a sensitization workshop for doctors and nurses on self-compassion and burnout prevention designed and delivered by Dr. Nayanjeet Chaudhury, who serves as the Senior Consultant at SHSRC, Shillong and also as an Honorary Consultant at Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences, Bengaluru. Dr. Chaudhury explores the concept of burnout and how healthcare professionals can effectively manage stress and emotional fatigue via practice of few evidence based skills. He uses physiological concepts to explain the nervous system's role in stress. The discussion covers the following: Stress and the Body: Dr. Nayanjeet discusses the function of cortisol as a stress and chronic inflammation marker, and how sympathetic overdrive (the "fight or flight" response) leads to fatigue and burnout. Heart Rate Variability (HRV): He explains the importance of a "flexible heart" (high HRV) as a sign of physical and mental health, resilience, and adaptability. Empathy vs. Compassion: He differentiates between empathy (which causes continuous pain and burnout) and compassion (which is action-oriented and activates the rationalizing prefrontal cortex or PFC). A Proposed Solution: Dr. Nayanjeet introduces a novel technique aimed at improving compassion and productivity by deliberately training the body's nervous system to quickly shift the brain from emotional distress to rational, action-oriented thought, the long term practice of which should lead to prevention of stress induced physical and mental health issues and increase in productivity in every field of work.
