Yet the deeper spiritual meaning is profound: Ishmael represents those born “according to the flesh” and human will—worldly; Isaac represents those born “according to the promise” and the Spirit—God’s. When Isaac was weaned and a great feast was held, Ishmael (around 14–15 years old) “mocked” him. The original Hebrew implies scorn and threat. Sarah, as a mother, perceived the danger to her young son’s safety and inheritance, demanding the expulsion of Hagar and her son. Abraham hesitated, but God directly commanded, “Listen to whatever Sarah tells you,” affirming her demand because the preservation and purity of the child of promise were paramount. Paul uses this to show that those of the world (flesh) will always persecute those of God (Spirit). Today, the church faces the same reality—marginalization, hostility toward Christians, and potential severe persecution through laws like C9 if passed. The speaker urges believers: we are adopted sons by grace under the promise, not accepted by the world. As the end times approach, persecution will intensify, as Revelation depicts the kings of the earth besieging the beloved city.
