Most of the boilers and turbines of the Marsa Power Station have now been dismantled. The last two cables linking the power station to the national electricity network were disconnected on 12th March 2017, paving the way for the full decommissioning of the last remaining units that were still on cold standby for emergency use until a few weeks ago. Enemalta plc will now continue the dismantling of these units, including their boilers, turbines, chimneys and HFO tanks. The Marsa Power Station plants that were on cold standby are no longer required since Enemalta is now receiving electricity from the new gas-fired plants at the Delimara Power Station. Enemalta plc started the process to switch off and decommission the Marsa Power Station in 2014. The power station was placed on cold standby in February 2015 after the Company completed the necessary electricity distribution network upgrades and modifications to ensure that the country’s electricity demand could be supplied through the Delimara Power Station. Eventually, some months later, Enemalta also completed and commissioned the Malta-Italy Interconnector project. However, to ensure that Malta retained an adequate level of security of supply, some of the Marsa Power Station’s boilers and steam turbines were kept available on cold standby for use in emergencies, until alternative capacity became available. The full decommissioning of the Marsa Power Station forms part of the Company’s long-term plan to develop a diversified electricity generation mix that provides an adequate level of security of supply, at reasonable, stable costs and with minimal environmental impact. This is being achieved through the development of the new gas-fired Delimara 4 plant by Electrogas Malta and the HFO-to-gas conversion of the 2012 Delimara 3 plant by Delimara 3 Power Generation Ltd. As a result, Enemalta will be able to fully-decommission and dismantle the old HFO-fired plants at Marsa and Delimara and end the use of HFO for electricity generation in Malta.
