Wide of Spanish Steps STORYLINE: Italy was gripped by a heat wave on Sunday, with sweltering temperatures reaching 36 degrees Celsius (96.8 degrees Fahrenheit) in Rome. In the Italian capital, many tourists visiting the main attractions in the city were forced to seek shade and cool off with ice cream or water from fountains. According to the Italian Ministry of Health, the hot weather reached an “orange” alert level (level 3 on a scale of 4) on Sunday in Rome and eight other cities along the Peninsula. The level prompted a health warning to be issued for the elderly, the vulnerable and children. Florence, Turin, Perugia, Palermo, Viterbo, Frosinone, Rieti and Bolzano have, like Rome, felt a significant rise in temperatures, kicking off in a week in which, according to experts from the Italian Air Force Meteorological Service, an African anticyclone will gain more and more power, bringing intense heat to the entire peninsula accompanied by a high level of humidity.
