This German built Junkers Ju 52/3m was the mainstay of the Norwegian civilian airliners from the middle 1935 until 1956. The classic airliner/transport flow by the Norwegian coastline and used floats. It was the first fast, modern way of travelling up'n'down Norway. Take note of the harbour environment and the boat - that boat is the actual boat used to transfer passengers to the float plane in Bodo harbour. Norwegian Aviation Museum, Bodo, Norway (C) Jukka O. By the standards of the time, this aircraft had extensive cargo capacity in addition to STOL capabilities. Furthermore, owing to the fact that they were very solidly built aircraft, some of them are still in active service today. In Switzerland, JU-AIR still runs passenger services using the Junkers Ju52/3m. The first Ju-52 took off in May 1932, and gradually, this type of aircraft was delivered with wheels, skis and floats to suit the local climate and terrain. In the 1930’s, it was the leading civilian transport plane in Europe, it could seat 15-17 passengers and carried, amongst other things, 75% of Lufthansa’s passengers. During World War II, Junkers Ju-52/3m’s comprised 90% of the Luftwaffe’s fleet of transport planes. Junkers Ju 52 in Norway In 1935, the Norwegian aviation company, Det Norske Luftfartsselskap (DNL), opened a commercial route between Oslo and Bergen, with flights along the coast on a Ju52 which they hired and later purchased from Lufthansa. DNL’s commercial routes were only in operation during the summer. DNL/SAS ran air services using the Ju 52/3 m until 1956.
