In 1984, Huffy bicycles won Olympic gold medals. Twenty years later, Walmart helped put them out of business — and almost nobody noticed. At its peak, Huffy's factory in Celina, Ohio was the largest bicycle factory in the world. Over two million bikes a year. Thousands of workers. Union wages. The kind of American manufacturing story that defined a generation. Then came the purchase order. Walmart wanted 900,000 bikes — at a price Huffy couldn't survive. Workers took pay cuts. Factories moved to Mexico, then China. And when Huffy finally outsourced everything to compete, the Chinese factories simply undercut them anyway.By 2004, Huffy's assets had been transferred to Chinese creditors. The Celina factory went silent. Nearly a thousand workers went home for the last time. This is the story of the Walmart Trap — and the hundreds of American manufacturers still falling into it today.
