He left the valuation entirely to them. And they weighed out thirty pieces of silver. But five hundred years earlier the prophet Zechariah recorded God asking Israel the exact same question — if it seems good to you give me my wages. And Israel's answer in Zechariah — thirty pieces of silver. And Israel's answer in Matthew — thirty pieces of silver. Same question. Same answer. Five hundred years apart. Under Mosaic law thirty pieces of silver was the compensation paid when a slave was accidentally killed. That is what Israel said the Son of God was worth to them. And God's response in Zechariah — throw it to the potter — that magnificent sum at which I am valued by them. The covenant was broken. The Good Shepherd rejected.
