House Republicans are moving ahead with a vote next week on the SAVE America Act, a controversial election bill that would require Americans to show proof of citizenship when registering to vote and present a government-issued photo ID at the polls. Democratic leaders are forcefully pushing back, framing voter ID laws as a form of voter suppression. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer compared the legislation to historical efforts to limit access to the ballot for people of color. (TNND) GOP leaders argue the measure is designed to strengthen election integrity and prevent non-citizens from participating in federal elections. Democrats, however, are sharply criticizing the bill, warning it could disproportionately affect minority voters and revive discriminatory voting practices. “The only reason you don’t want it is because you want people to vote who aren’t citizens or shouldn’t be voting,” said Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, one of the bill’s leading advocates. Democratic leaders are forcefully pushing back, framing voter ID laws as a form of voter suppression.
