2023 Acura Integra | First Look

This is the 2023 Acura Integra, er, prototype. A storied nameplate with a lot of hype. We get a first look to see if this one’s got a shot at living up to its legacy. While we don’t have a ton of information about this one, we do have a lot of opinion and those land in both the win and loss columns. First, win. The Integra will be available the a turbocharged engine, a 1.5-liter VTEC engine. This is the first Integra to be offered as a turbo from the factory. Another win, as with its predecessor’s Acura assured enthusiast that the Integra will be offered with a 6-speed manual transmission and a limited slip differential for getting power to the ground. Okay, so now a polarizing one, the styling. The biggest bummer is that this Integra comes with four doors instead of two. And yes, if you think it looks reminiscent to something else, it’s got a lot of Civic characteristics. And since the Civic coupe is no longer being offered, we’ve got us four doors here. but you may not realize that the original model was also a four door hatch. Digest that for a sec. The sheet metal is completely unique to the Integra so that’s not Civic shared, win, and those vents are working. Meaning not fake just for looks, also win. In Acura’s language they’re calling the rear end of the Integra Prototype muscular, and coupe-like, one would think to make up for those extra doors, some have compared the shape similar to the short-lived Honda Crosstour. But I assure you it is smaller in person and not as bulbous in the booty. The headlights are very similar to those that appear on the Acura TLX, and those look great. At the rear, the self-contained single taillight pays homage to former Integras, but carries that chicane styling over from the front end. It also gets a dual exhaust, decklid/hatchback spoiler and rear diffuser. It’s even got the stamped Integra in the both front and rear bumpers like the third gen. No badge. Add on 19-inch wheels and Brembo brakes with Indy Yellow calipers, it’s definitely got a performance look. No you will not have to get this graphic on yours. The paint looks so much better in person than you might have seen online. This Indy Yellow Pearl is supposed to nod to the iconic Phoenix Yellow color of the 2000-2001 Integra Type R. It looks more orange online, but front and center it’s pretty exciting. So, if the paint makes a nod to the Type R, perhaps Acura is hinting that this Integra will get the rest of the Type R treatment as well. One more for the win column, a $30,000 base price. There’s no information on the interior yet, or frankly, anything else, but we’ll get it to you when we do. Enthusiasts are always begging for a compact, manual transmission, turbocharged car. So, while the new Acura Integra (Prototype) might not tick off all the desired boxes, for those reasons alone, there’s more to be happy about than to complain about.
