Follow The Daily Conversation on Twitter / thedailyconvo Here's the latest, confirmed information from the ongoing attack in Kenya. -At least 62 dead , including 3 Britons and 2 Canadians after around a dozen militants from Somalia stormed a Westgate shopping mall in an upscale part of Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, on Saturday at lunchtime. The firefight and standoff has lasted nearly 3 days, but a heavy assault by security forces is underway to end the standoff. Gunfire and explosions have been heard throughout the day today -and left 175 injured 5 Americans were injured. The nephew of the President of Kenya and a renowned Ghanaian poet were also killed. -Also among the dead was Ruhila Adatia-Sood, a popular Kenyan radio host who was in the parking lot of the mall hosting a cooking competition. -at this moment 63 people remain missing and only three of the attackers have been killed. -Several witnesses said that some of the ringleaders of the attack may have escaped during the initial confusion as they saw one assailant, who did not look African, quickly tear off his clothes and change into a new outfit and then run out, blending in with a crowd of panicked, fleeing civilians. -Several security officials in Nairobi said that there may have been two women among the militants who also escaped after the initial stage of the attack, raising fears that well-trained terrorists could be on the loose in Nairobi. -The rest remain holed up in different parts of the mall, likely with hostages. -The militants attacked in two groups from two different floors of the mall, then set fire to a supermarket inside to create a tactical diversion. -The islamist group al-Shabab has claimed responsibility for the attack. The group says that it is retribution against Kenya for its military's operation in next-door Somalia. They reportedly did not fire on Muslims in the mall. -In Kenya, the militia has staged small attacks on local targets such as bus stations and churches, killing a handful of people, since the Kenyan government sent troops to Somalia in October 2011. But Saturday's attack suggested far greater operational planning and tactical sophistication, analysts said. -Not all terrorism experts agreed that the attack showed al-Shabab's strength. Juan Cole, a professor at the University of Michigan, wrote in a blog that the attack was "the act of a declining political movement that has lost enormous ground in recent years" and is "on its way to oblivion." -But Bruce Hoffman, a counterterrorism expert at Georgetown University, countered that point by saying a reemergence of al-Shabab could place new strain on U.S. intelligence and counterterrorism agencies, which have shifted resources to places such as Syria, Egypt and Mali. , Kenya,Mall,Attack,Assault,Nairobi,Africa,Al Shabaab,Harakat Al-Shabaab Mujahideen (Organization),al-shabaab,news,politics,TDC,TheDailyConversation,President,Kenyatta,Ruhila Adatia-Sood,Nephew,Killed,injured,175,62,hostages,shopping mall,Somalia, extremist, terrorism, terrorists,Military,Canadian,British,Citizens,American,Israeli,United States Of America (Country),President Obama,Kofi Awoonor, poet, tragedy, breaking, video
