The COVID-19 pandemic hasn’t just affected people’s health. It has also had a dramatic effect on the global economy, creating shortages and driving up prices. Wisconsin Foundation and Alumni Association CEO Mike Knetter talks with two UW faculty members, economics professor Kim Ruhl and business professor Gregory DeCroix, about how the pandemic affected supply chains and the labor market. DeCroix talks about shortages that have occurred recently: toilet paper in 2020; computer chips, shipping containers, furniture, and chlorine in 2021. He tracks how supply chain items — cardboard boxes, shipping containers, and the like — can affect the ability of producers to meet the needs of consumers, raising prices. Ruhl talks about the U.S. recovery following the COVID recession, with higher wages as employers compete for fewer workers. He also runs through the industry sectors that are struggling to find workers.
