Why Research Video Games? My Answer With Existentialism and Philosophy

So, why the connection between philosophy and video games? Why study video games at all? This is only one part of a much more complicated story, but surely part of the answer to the question of what it means to be human, and how we cope with the anxieties of existence, is that we play, and we find meaning in playing, in sport, in competition, in games. Couple this with the fact that we also find meaning in narratives and psychologically engaging experiences, and in video games you’ve got a powerful medium for human beings to find meaning in, and to explore what it means to be human.
