Moon or supernova ? This is what happened in the cold sky over Euroa, Victoria, Australia on the night of 20 May 2016. I walked out the back door of our house in Euroa and was struck by the spectacle overhead. Quick ! Grab the camera ! I had no idea what exposure to use, so I just tried a range of exposures until I got something I liked. It occurred to me later that I could use all 23 images to make a little movie which would look a bit like a supernova explosion. Astronomy: What are we looking at ? It is Earth's moon (Luna) with a "22 degree halo". This halo or ring is an "optical illusion" which is seen as the moonlight is refracted within millions of hexagonal ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/22°_halo Near the top right hand corner of the image, inside the halo, you will also see Mars appear, followed by Saturn a little further above and to the right, outside the halo.. Camera: Nikon D7100 (…Janet’s camera) Lens AF-S DX Nikkor 18-140mm Tripod mounted. Shutter operated by infrared remote control. ISO 200 focal length 18 mm aperture f3.5 resolution 6000 x 4000 pixels image type: JPEG file size 7.3 Megabytes exposure of the single image = 13 seconds exposure of the set of 23 images ranges from 0.5 to 121.6 seconds Photographic adjustments: Nil. Music: “Lacrimosa” from the Requiem K. 626 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and friends. Libretto: Lacrimosa dies illa Qua resurget ex favilla Judicandus homo reus. Huic ergo parce, Deus: Pie Jesu Domine, Dona eis requiem. Amen English translation: Mournfully be that day On which from ashes shall arise The guilty man to be judged; O God, have mercy on him. Gentle Lord Jesus, Grant them eternal rest. Amen. Symbolism: Supernova ? Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was a brilliant, but all too brief flash in the vast firmament of European music. Music history: Mozart died on 5 December 1791 probably from kidney failure as a result of natural causes. He was aged only 35 years. Mozart left the Requiem unfinished. The work had been secretly commissioned by Count Franz von Walsegg. Mozart's widow Constanze organised for the Requiem to be finished by Joseph von Eybler and mainly by Franz Xaver Süssmayr. The Requiem (probably only Introitus and Kyrie) was first performed at a memorial concert for Mozart, 10 December 1791. Indeed, Mozart was the first "recipient" of his own Requiem. On the 35th Anniversary of his father's death, Franz Xaver Wolfgang Mozart conducted Mozart's Requiem at St.George's Ukrainian Greek Catholic Cathedral in Lviv (Lemberg). Musical performance: The performance of Mozart's Requiem used in this movie is by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Concert Choir conducted by Dr. William Cutter.
