Infectious disease research is largely led by countries in the global north, competition and profit. As a result, it's failing to meet the needs of the communities most affected by diseases. To reverse inequitable structures, research must focus on countries where the burden of disease is highest. That's why organisations like the Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) are so important. Based in South Africa, AHRI works within local contexts to better understand and prevent diseases like tuberculosis (TB). Being embedded in the community it aims to serve provides a deeper understanding of the social, economic and cultural factors that contribute to the spread and impact of diseases – and makes research more equitable in the process. In this video, experts from AHRI explain why this context is vital for research. ––– 🔔 Subscribe to Wellcome on YouTube: https://wellc.me/3Blh0c1 💬 SOCIAL MEDIA: Follow us on Twitter: / wellcometrust Follow us on Instagram: / wellcometrust Connect with us on LinkedIn: / wellcome-trust Find us on Facebook: / wellcometrust 🔗 MORE FROM WELLCOME: Wellcome is a global charitable foundation.
