[ELL Talks and Seminars] Research Questions in Language Education and Applied Linguistics: Strategies for their Conceptualization and Development by Dr. Christine Coombe In my own development as a teacher educator in general and as a teacher of research methods in particular, I am often called on to mentor students, both undergraduate and graduate, in choosing not only a research topic but also on the process of formulating research questions. In looking for relevant literature to help me in this mentoring process, I have more often than not come up short. In fact, White (2013) has described the neglect of research questions in both methods texts and the wider academic literature (p. 1) and goes on to point out that this lack is not specific to educational research but exists in the social sciences as well as the humanities. In our field, second language research is a vast area with many questions yet to be answered. However, not all questions are good questions. Therefore, it is essential to know what good research questions are and what they involve. Come to this session to learn strategies for developing effective research questions.
