On this tour we visit Oxford locations featured in Philip Pullman’s fantasy works His Dark Materials (The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass) and The Book of Dust (including La Belle Sauvage and The Secret Commonwealth). We visit The Botanic Garden, Exeter College, Godstow Abbey, and Sunderland Avenue. Filmed in Midsummer 2025. Philip Pullman, born October 19, 1946, is a highly acclaimed English author best known for the fantasy His Dark Materials trilogy. He was knighted in 2019 for his contributions to literature. Pullman's works often explore complex themes of morality, religion, and philosophy, frequently drawing inspiration from Milton's Paradise Lost. Pullman's works often feature strong, adventurous protagonists and explore themes of free will, knowledge, and the nature of good and evil. He is known for his atheistic views and his engagement with religious and philosophical ideas. The last part of The Book of Dust, The Rose Field, will be published in October 2025. This is part of my literary pilgrimages series, where I visit places connected to stories and pay my respects to authors and characters. "His Dark Materials" is a fantasy trilogy following the coming-of-age journey of Lyra Belacqua and Will Parry as they navigate parallel universes, encountering fantastical creatures and facing epic challenges. The story explores themes of innocence, love, sin, and authority, set against a backdrop of clashing science, theology, and magic. Lyra, in a world where human souls manifest as animal companions called daemons, discovers a secret involving Lord Asriel and Marisa Coulter, and a mysterious substance called Dust. Her quest, intertwined with a prophecy, leads her to other worlds and ultimately to Will, who also has a destiny linked to his father's disappearance. Together, they embark on a journey to liberate their world from the oppressive Magisterium.
