When I am frayed and strained and drizzle at the end Please someone cut a square and put me in a quilt That I might keep some child warm —Nikki Giovanni, “Quilts” In this gathering, we listened and contemplated the poem "Quilts" by Nikki Giovanni. The Well's Patrick Raneses opened our session with a Begin Again Meditation and spoken word artist and poet Gifted Johnson-Wilkinson opened led our exploration of the poem. PROMPT, 10 minutes: 1) This poem opens up its first line with a simile: "Like a fading piece of cloth" What kind of simile can you think of when it comes to aging? 2) When you see a quilt, it can evoke an array of thoughts and feelings. Whether it is deeply connected to a personal memory, a cultural narrative, or a vibrant piece of artwork. What do you think of when you see a beautiful quilt? (find 3 words to describe it) 3) Use these 3 words and your simile for aging to create a poem. READ poems created by the group during this session: https://www.thewell.world/news-media/...
