Carrying His own cross, Jesus goes to Golgotha (The Place of a Skull), where He is crucified between two criminals (vv. 17-18). Pilate has an inscription placed above the cross: "Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews", written in Aramaic, Latin, and Greek—a declaration that unwittingly proclaims the truth (vv. 19-22). The soldiers divide His garments by casting lots, unknowingly fulfilling Psalm 22:18 (vv. 23-24). Even in agony, Jesus shows tender care for His mother, entrusting her to the beloved disciple: "Woman, behold, your son!" and "Behold, your mother!" (vv. 25-27). Knowing all is now accomplished to fulfill Scripture, Jesus says, "I thirst", receives sour wine, and then utters His triumphant final words: "It is finished."
