This is no. 12 in the series "Weird Tales Told by a Dubliner", composed and performed by Turlough Conmee. This story is called "Sleeper cells in parallel worlds", and it deals with the issue of doppelgangers pursuing one from country to country, and continent to continent. The point is that we encounter doppelgangers who do not realise that they are avatars of people we have known in a different setting far away. They are "sleepers". But what if a signal or cue came to them that reactivated them in their old identities? Your partner might wake up in bed beside you in the middle of the night - and for a brief period, become a different person. Doppelgangers are typically people who resemble exactly a person we once knew in another place. One special sort of doppelganger is the "unredeemed self", a version of oneself left behind somewhere. An example of this in the present story is taken from the Soviet psychologist Luria in his book "The Mind of a Mnemonist". Another sort is the "unredeemed other", a version of a significant someone else left behind somewhere. The example quoted for this is "L'enfant de la haute mer", the short story by Jules Supervielle.
