Treatment Of Gallstones And Bile Duct Stones By E R C P (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography) And Minimally Invasive Surgery. Due to the advancements in imaging technology, diagnosis of the bile duct and pancreatic duct abnormalities by using endoscopic examination –E R C P (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography) can be concurrently conducted with laparoscopic surgery to treat gallstones and bile duct stones. These combined procedures provide significant benefits, including reduced anaesthetic-related risks, faster recovery time, shorter hospital stays, and a quick return to daily life while helping to reduce medical expenses. A 75-year-old patient presented with upper tummy pain. Had past history of gallstones and was advised to have a cholecystectomy, however. The patient had not turned up for surgery. This time ultrasound scan was done and found a soft tissue mass around the common bile duct opening, however, the CT scan showed an around 1cm diameter gallstone in the common bile duct. ERCP was done to evacuate the gallstone by Dr Chaturanga Kappetiyagama, the consultant GI surgeon at National Hospital Kandy.
