Perozziello Nel 1073 e alla morte di Alessandro II venne finalmente il momento per Ildebrando di Soana (1010-1085) di prendere il possesso del trono di Pietro. L’autorità e il prestigio di Ildebrando che ricopriva allora il ruolo di Abate di San Paolo fuori le Mura erano talmente grandi che fu eletto papa direttamente e per acclamazione dal popolo di Roma e la sua scelta dovette essere solo e in seguito confermata dal collegio cardinalizio. La personalità del nuovo pontefice era complessa. Decise di chiamarsi Gregorio VII assumendo il nome che era stato di Papa Gregorio Magno che aveva saputo governare la Chiesa con autorità e prestigio in tempi difficili mantenendo l’indipendenza del Papato nelle dispute tra i Longobardi e l’Imperatore di Costantinopoli. Nell’inverno del 1076 il poco più che ventenne Enrico IV dichiarò decaduto il pontefice in base al Privilegio Ottoniano e al fatto che il Papa fosse stato eletto per acclamazione popolare. Invitò il popolo di Roma a scegliersi un nuovo pontefice, questa volta in accordo con l’imperatore. Enrico aveva sbagliato i propri calcoli e non si aspettava di subire le conseguenze dei suoi errori. Il mese successivo Gregorio VII infatti emanò una bolla di scomunica contro l’Imperatore sciogliendo dal giuramento di fedeltà feudale i nobili del regno. Nel gennaio del 1077 l’esercito di Enrico IV Franconia si accampò pertanto davanti alle mura del Castello di Canossa che proteggevano Papa Gregorio VII. Il pontefice vi aveva trovato rifugio alla notizia dell’arrivo dell’imperatore mentre l’autorità di Enrico si stava sfaldando giorno dopo giorno in seguito alla scomunica papale. Appare difficile immaginare che l’imperatore abbia atteso al freddo, coperto da un semplice saio e in ginocchio per tre giorni e tre notti consecutive di essere accolto all’interno del castello e perdonato. Probabilmente fu eretto un baldacchino davanti alla porta sotto il quale Enrico attese pazientemente aiutato da qualche genere di conforto. Alla fine, il giorno 28 di gennaio, il Papa lo accolse e revocò la scomunica. Non annullò tuttavia la libertà per i sudditi di Enrico IV di aderire oppure di discostarsi dal giuramento di obbedienza.
