(4 Jun 1997) T/I: 10:49:51 The Organisation of African Unity (OAU) summit wound up in Harare, Zimbabwe on Wednesday (4/6) with a threat of violence against the coup leaders in Sierra Leone and a warning that the day of the coup is over in Africa. Leaders at the summit gave West African states a mandate to take whatever action was necessary to restore the government of President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah in Sierra Leone. SHOWS: HARARE, ZIMBABWE, 4/6 SOT Salim Salim (English) "So the feeling that Africa has for Libya is very profound. As to what practical measures? We are working with the Arab League. We have a committee of five Foreign Ministers and a committee of seven Arab countries. We are looking at all the options. We have three options presented to the Security Council. We feel that when we take the merit of the case the justification for sanctions are not there.": c/a news conference SOT Robert Mugabe (English) "But we are talking about democracy and most of the people who are loud-mouthed about it. If they want democracy applied worldwide, must democracy apply only to particular countries and not in the field of international relations and international organisations. I don't think they have a moral or legal basis on which to stand except to say that the biggest must have the largest share - the bullying you get in schools sometimes." c/a journalists SOT delegate (Dr. Justin Yaakarop, spokesman for John Garaway sot in English) "And the present arms struggle led by Dr John Garundi SPM-SPLA from 1983 to to the present time, that actually gives you war in Sudan for about 42 years and this gives you the longest civil war, not only in Africa but, in the world today." w/s delegates; delegates stand for playing of OAU anthem; 2.19 Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter: / ap_archive Facebook: / aparchives Instagram: / apnews You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
