In this video I explain how I made my paddles for the cedar strip canoe I just built. Steps 1. Cut your strips - I cut my strips to 1 ½” thick and various widths 2. Glue your strips - I used West System epoxy to laminate my strips because I had some left over but I would have been fine using Titebond 3 Wood Glue. 3. Plane down to 1 inch thick - If you don’t have a planer, google a local woodworker in your area and see if they will plane a paddle for $10 4. Draw your blade and handle shape half template - on cardstock, half for symetry 5. Cut it out! - with a bandsaw or a jig saw 6. Round over edges of handle and shaft with router - If you don’t have a router a hand planer or spokeshave work also 7. Smooth the edges and draw the ¼” centered reference gap - See video for the makeshift “centered-reference-gap-making-tool” 8. Draw grid - I spaced the grid lines by about an inch. If you do much more than that you risk chiseling against the grain and gouging out a deep chunk. 9. Mimic grid with circular saw cutting more and more shallow as you approach the shaft - I started at a ¼” deep on the edges and brought the blade of the circular saw up by about a 64th of an inch on each line as I make my way towards the shaft. This creates an even taper from the shaft to the edges. 10. Chisel out the grid pieces - Careful not too deep!!! 11. Sand smooth with belt sander, then orbital sander - 12. Clean up with hand sanding Wood Western Red Cedar, Black Walnut, White Ash This is only to match my canoe. If I were trying to make a performance paddle I would make the whole thing out of Western Red Cedar because it is lightweight. Dimensions - Do whatever works for you! Go try a couple paddles and take the best qualities from all of them and combine them into yours! My dimensions ended up being... Length - 59” (or about up to my shoulder) Thickness - 1” Width - 1 ¼” at shaft, 7” at blade If you liked this video and want to see more like it subscribe to my channel!!! / @aguydoingstuffadam Here is a guy that looks like here really knows what he is doing! unfortunately I don't have any drum sanders like his. 7:30 minutes in is where it really starts to get good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLNFT...
